success and fruit

Filed under: Uncategorized — Joshua Scott @ 9:10 am

In “Our Greatest Gift, a Meditation on Dying and Caring,” Henri Nouwen said:

“Jesus lived less than forty years; he didn’t travel outside his own country; the people who knew him during his life scarcely understood him; and when he died, only a few of his followers remained faithful. In every respect, his life was a failure. Success had left him, popularity had dwindled, and all his power was gone. Still, few lives have been so fruitful; few lives have affected the thinking and feeling of other people so deeply; few have so profoundly shaped future cultures; few have influenced so radically the patterns of human relationships. Jesus himself referred constantly to the fruitfulness of his life that would only become manifest after his death.”

Too often, the way I would describe success would be in conflict with the way Jesus did/does.  The life and death of Jesus is the exact opposite of the way our culture tries to define success.

Nouwen also said:

“The real question before our death is not, How much can I still accomplish, or How much influence can I still exert? but, How can I live so that I can continue to be fruitful when I am no longer here among my family and friends? That question shifts our attention from doing to being. Our doing brings success, but our being bears fruit. The great paradox of our lives is that we are often concerned about what we do or still can do, but we are most likely to be remembered for who we were. If the Spirit guides our lives—the Spirit of love, joy, peace, gentleness, forgiveness, courage, perseverance, hope and faith—then that Spirit will not die but will continue to grow from generation to generation.”

Doing is important. The world does not need more people who simply sit around and theorize about all the things that need to be done, and how if someone would just do it, then world would be a better place. We must put our faith into action.

But, if we want to do something that lasts, then it must come from a place of being. From people who have been radically changed by the power of God at work within us.

I can be a success and leave nothing good or positive or long term behind.

To be honest, I often pray for, dream about, and obsess over success. The truth is, however, if I am not the kind of person God is calling me to be…any success I may experience will end with me. When we allow God to make us into the people he wants us to be…our lives will continue to bear fruit, to influence, to do good, even when we aren’t here.

Today!

Frederick Buechner said:

“In the entire history of the universe, let alone in your own history, there has never been another day just like today, and there will never be another just like it again. Today is the point to which all your yesterdays have been leading since the hour of your birth. It is the point from which all your tomorrows will proceed until the hour of your death. If you were aware of how precious today is, you could hardly live through it. Unless you are aware of how precious it is, you can hardly be said to be living at all.”

My prayer for us is that we will live fully today. Take the opportunities to love, encourage, serve, give, laugh, cry, and really LIVE…today

Today is loaded with potential. It is brimming with possibility.

So, what are you going to do with today?

it’s funny how a pig can bring people together…

Filed under: Uncategorized — Joshua Scott @ 9:22 am

This past weekend was very busy…but it was a blast!

Last night about 150 people from MCC gathered at Duane and Teri Curry’s for a Luau…complete with a pig that was cooked in the ground!

I had never eaten pork that was prepared this way…and I had never seen anyone prepare the pig to go into the ground…but I experienced both of them this weekend.

[THIS WAS NOT OUR PIG...just in case you started feeling guilty.]

Spending such a great time with so many from our church last night reminded me of this verse from Acts 2 that describes one of the characteristics of the first Christian community:

“They broke bread in their homes and ate together with glad and sincere hearts…” [TNIV]

So often we think of “church” as a service or building or an amorphous blob, but in reality the church, at its best, is comprised of ordinary people living the way of Jesus together, in community.

My dream for MCC is that we would continue to grow together as we serve, give, and share our lives in community.

There are lots of ways to experience community. One of the ways I have found to be most fulfilling is through a small group. We will be having small group sign-ups soon, and I would love for the overwhelming majority of our community to get plugged in to a group!

How are you experiencing community in your life right now?

*There were lots of people who worked very hard to make last night’s Luau a blast…thanks to all of you!

A few good reads…

Filed under: Uncategorized — Joshua Scott @ 6:00 am

I love to read. In fact, I spend a lot of time reading.

I like to  read a large variety of authors, some I agree with, some I don’t.

I am also a highlighter…I obnoxiously highlight anything I find helpful, even at times coloring the whole page yellow/green.

So, I thought that I would share a few books with you that I have read recently that were really interesting or helpful.

Exclusion and Embrace by Miroslav Volf

Evil and the Justice of God by N.T. [Tom] Wright

The Reason for God by Tim Keller

Jesus and Empire by Richard Horsley

The First Paul by John Dominic Crossan and Marcus Borg

If you have a “must read” or a book you have found extremely helpful, feel free to share it with us in the comments section so we can all enjoy it!

Have a great day!

So, I thought I would ask those of you who stop by to help me out a little.

What should the new name of my blog be???

Thanks in advance for your help!

How present are you?

Filed under: God — Joshua Scott @ 8:15 am

The 13/14th century German theologian Meister Eckhart said:

“What our Lord did was done with the intent, and this alone, that he might be with us and we with him.”

So often God gets imagined like a distant deity who is disappointed in us [best case] or angry at us  [worst case].

So often having a relationship with God is seen as nothing more than obeying a certain set of rules. We do what God says and we hope that keeps us out of trouble.

In Jesus, however, we get a picture of what God is really like. God wants to be present with us. In Jesus God took on human skin. He laughed and cried. He felt joy and pain. He is present to us.

Not so we can keep the rules better, but so that we can be transformed by his love.

Recently I heard someone ask the question, “are you present to God?”.

It took me by surprise. Most of my life, I have prayed that God would be present to me. What I have just started understanding is that God is present to me…but I am not always present to him.

One of the things I have been praying each morning is simply, “God, help me to be present to you today.”

I want my eyes open to experience the “Divine in the daily.” I want to be aware of his voice, his work, and everything that he wants to say/do/be in me and through me.

I have to admit, I fail at this more than I actually do it. But my prayer is that I will become more and more present to the God who is so present to me.

Are you going to be present to God today?

the true test…

Filed under: Uncategorized — Joshua Scott @ 6:00 am

St. Francis de Sales was the Bishop of Geneva in the 17th century. I recently ran across this quote from him:

“The test of a preacher is that his congregation goes away saying, not, “What a lovely sermon!” but, “I will do something!””

Wow! For me, as a preacher, that is very challenging…but also very true.  I often wonder how much of what I teach/preach actually challenges people to do something with it?

So, I would love to hear/learn from all you great preachers out there. How do you inspire people to “do something”?

MCC Mission Team is on the way home!

Filed under: Uncategorized — Joshua Scott @ 3:01 pm

Last week, a group of people from MCC and other churches in our town, left for the Dominican Republic to serve and love and share their lives. Today they are on their way back home.

Last I heard, they were in Chicago, waiting to fly into Nashville.

I can’t wait to hear their stories and share in their excitement.

Thanks so much to all of you who have helped make their trip possible–through giving your time, money, and your  prayers.

The Whole Story @ MCC…

Filed under: Uncategorized — Joshua Scott @ 2:55 pm

tws title

In a couple of  weeks, Sunday August 1 to be exact, we are beginning a new series at MCC. I have really been looking forward to “The Whole Story” series for quite a while, and I hope that our community gets as excited about it as I have.

During “The Whole Story” we will explore the BIG story that the scripture is telling. Everything Jesus says and does in the Gospels is connected to this BIG story. The New Testament writers like Paul and Peter are also connected to and interacting with this BIG story.

So, for the next couple months [yep, that is not a typo!] we are going to explore the Whole Story…from creation to new creation. My prayer is that we will gain a new appreciation for the story we are part of as followers of Jesus.

Here are a couple of ways that you can interact with this series:

1. To help us experience the Whole Story, we will pass out book marks with daily scripture readings…we won’t cover everything in the Bible, but we will look at various passages that help us see the story more clearly.

2. Each week we will interact as a community on-line through a blog. This will give us an opportunity each day to ask questions and share insight from the scriptures.

I hope you will join us for “The Whole Story” beginning August 1!
